Malaysia's Backbone: Why SMEs Need a Reliable CRM, and Why Platform Followers Are Not Customers You Own

MSMEs generate almost 40% of Malaysia's GDP and nearly half its jobs. Here is why growing SMEs need a reliable CRM, and why sales on Shopee or TikTok Shop mean little if you do not own your customer data.

The short version

Small and medium businesses are not a side story in Malaysia. They are the economy: almost 40% of GDP, nearly half of all jobs, and in 2025 they grew faster than the country as a whole.

Many of them now sell through Shopee, TikTok Shop and live streams. That brings reach, but it also brings rising fees and a quiet problem: the customer belongs to the platform, not to you. A reliable CRM is how a growing SME turns one-off buyers into customers it actually owns.

The backbone of the economy, in numbers

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, micro, small and medium enterprises produced RM689.8 billion of value in 2025, 39.7% of the economy. They grew 5.7%, ahead of the overall economy's 5.2%. They employ 8.09 million people, 48.7% of everyone in work, and exported RM214.5 billion of goods and services.

Most of them are very small. Of the 1.1 million MSMEs in SME Corp's latest profile, almost 70% are micro businesses. Which is exactly why the tools they choose matter: a ten-person company cannot afford to lose track of a single good customer.

Platforms bring reach, and a bigger bill

E-commerce and social commerce have been a lifeline. TikTok Shop says it supports around 400,000 local sellers and creators, and live selling now makes up nearly a third of its sales in Malaysia. We wrote about why live selling works in our live selling article.

But the cost of selling on platforms keeps rising. In 2026 Shopee Malaysia added a 5% technical support fee on completed orders, on top of commission, SST and transaction fees. On an electronics order, that leaves the seller about RM86 of every RM100 before shipping, vouchers or ads.

A follower is not a customer you own

Here is the part most SMEs only notice later. On a marketplace, you often see a masked name, no phone number, and an address that disappears after delivery. To reach the same buyer again, you pay the platform again, through ads or vouchers.

If the platform changes its fees, its algorithm or its rules, your sales change with it. And if your account is suspended, your customer list goes with it. The ZUS and Luckin story shows the opposite approach: build the relationship on a channel you own. Read how they own their customer data.

The same customer, seen two ways. Kedai Sample and Aina are fictional. Only use details customers give you directly with their consent, and follow each platform's seller terms.

Why a reliable CRM matters for SMEs

One record per customer
Every enquiry, order, chat and quote in one place, whether it came from Shopee, TikTok, WhatsApp, your website or a walk-in.
No more lost follow-ups
Spreadsheets and chat groups let good leads slip. A CRM reminds the right person, at the right time, every time.
Repeat sales without ad spend
With consent, you can bring customers back on WhatsApp or email when they are ready to buy again, at no platform cost.
Know your real numbers
Margin by channel, repeat rate and lifetime value show which platform actually pays, not just which one sells the most.
The business outlives the staff
When a salesperson leaves, the customer history stays with the company, not in their phone.
Ready for e-invoicing and growth
Clean customer and order data makes MyInvois, financing applications and expansion far easier.

If your team still runs sales from spreadsheets, our e-book The RM180,000 Row shows what that really costs, one week at a time.

Use platforms for reach, a CRM for relationships

You do not need to leave the platforms. You need a way to turn their buyers into your customers, with their permission.

1
Invite, do not scrape
A parcel card, a QR code or a live-stream offer that asks buyers to join your rewards or WhatsApp list. Follow each platform's seller terms and the PDPA.
2
Give a reason to join
Member prices, early access to drops, birthday treats or faster service on your own channel.
3
Put every customer in one CRM
Orders from every channel, joined into one profile with consent recorded.
4
Bring them back on your terms
Reorder reminders, new arrivals and loyalty offers on WhatsApp or email, measured against platform ads.
